Race Beneficiary Raising More Than Money - The Campaign for Centre House Our 2010 beneficiary provides shelter for our county's most vulnerable families and individuals. The emergency shelter program of Housing Transitions Inc., known as Centre House, provides shelter, food, support and counseling to families and individuals who are homeless or in crisis. Housing issues and basic need emergencies can result from a variety of personal crises, poverty, physical and mental illness, and a lack of intervention resources. The services provided by HTI promote positive change for individuals and families willing to accept the challenges and opportunities necessary to gain a more independent and self-sufficient lifestyle. Raising More Than Money: The Campaign for Centre House is yet another way HTI strives to provide its clients with hope, the chance to dream, and a vision for the future. HTI's mission is to help families and individuals achieve a more independent lifestyle by providing a continuum of effective and well-managed services. The mOUnTaiNBACK selected the Centre House program because the lack of affordable housing in our community creates a critical need for HTI's services. The Federal Reserve Bank, in a recent statewide housing report, listed Centre County as the worst county in Pennsylvania for the wide gap in affordability versus income, and the trend over the past 10 years has been frightening. We ask everyone taking part in this year's event to consider making a donation. All gifts, however small, make a real, immediate difference in people's lives. At Centre House, living is communal, and each resident is responsible for completing several housekeeping chores daily to help keep the shelter running efficiently. The Centre House case manager works with each individual or family to set objectives for employment, housing, child care services, etc.; review progress; and coordinate and make referrals to other community services. The case manager provides the resources or referral for services to assist the resident's success in this program and find stable housing upon exit. The shelter does not provide financial assistance, but will assist the residents with calls to other agencies, churches, etc. to put together a package for first month rent and/or security deposit, medication, or other substantial needs. "We at HTI are extremely grateful that the Centre House building expansion and renovation project has been selected as the beneficiary of the 2010 Tussey Mountainback Relay and Ultramarathon race," said Ron Quinn, executive director of Housing Transitions, Inc. "Our ability to provide a warm, safe, and supportive living environment to Centre County residents in need is the direct result of the overwhelming generosity of efforts like the Mountainback race. Thank you!" Race registration will be set up to enable participants registering for the race to also make - and invite friends, family and colleagues to make - a donation to the cause on behalf of themselves, either as an individual runner or as a member of a registered relay team. Prizes will be awarded to the top men's, women's and mixed teams and top male and female individuals raising the most funds.
