2020 Tussey Mountainback COVID Update

There’s no question, the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic have affected all of us. At the same time, we still need our miles, our hills, our horizons. In the interest of community health and safety, and in consultation with the Bureau of Forestry, this year’s race on Oct. 11 is undertaking several changes.

  • Participants. The event will host only ultramarathoners (solo entrants). Relay teams will not take part in this year’s event. Two exceptions will be made; the Old Men of the Mountains relay team, and a limited number of family teams that reside in the same household.

  • Limited registration. Event capacity, including runners, staff and volunteers will be limited to 250 persons.

  • Aid stations. Aid stations will have the standard medical supplies. Drop bags will be accepted for all aid stations. There will be bottled water and Gatorade at all aid stations. There will be no grab-it food items.

  • Self-support. Your drop bags, provided by you before the start, will be accepted. Normally available at aid stations 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11, drop bags will be accepted for all 11 aid stations. The drop bags will be transported by race staff to the aid stations. Race staff will wear masks and gloves to handle drop bags and other supplies. Runners will retrieve their own drop bags at the aid stations.

  • Support vehicles. Ultrarunners wishing to use a self-provided support vehicle, a standard option, will be permitted to do so. Support vehicle drivers should provide their credentials (driver’s license and vehicle information) via email to registration@tusseymountainback.com before race day. The fee associated with using a support vehicle is $40.

  • Touchless check in. Runners must preregister online prior to race day. On race day, runners will check in verbally to confirm their participation and receive their packets. Social distancing will be required.

  • Medical check in. All participants and event staff will have their temperature taken and complete a medical questionnaire upon arrival at the event venue.

  • Masks. Please bring and wear a mask before the start. We will have limited masks available if you forget yours. You are not required to wear a mask during the race. You will have an opportunity to remove your mask just before the start.

  • Social distancing. Social distancing of 6 feet or more from others is mandatory at this event. Please observe this before, during, and after the race.

  • Check-in on the course. Race staff will be confirming your arrival at each aid station. Please help them to see your bib number as you arrive.

  • Medical personnel. A mobile EMS unit will be onsite during the entire event. The EMS unit will be provided with a radio unit from the race staff.

  • Staggered start. Runners will start in several staggered waves to increase social distancing at the start. Starts will occur in waves of no more than 25 participants and be launched every 15 minutes. Participants must stay clear of the starting line area and keep social distancing of at least 6 feet until 10 minutes prior to their start time. Please wear your mask while waiting at the start. You may remove it as soon as the race begins. We will have a container for disposing of masks. You will be informed of your start time prior to race day.

  • No formal post event. We will provide a socially distanced recovery area near the finish. There will be grab-and-go water and packaged snacks. Please use this area as needed, then make room for the next runners finishing. We appreciate your cooperation and assistance.

  • Finish line. Packaged snacks and beverages will be available at the finish. Chairs for athlete recovery will be placed at spacing that allows for safe distancing. Masks will be provided at the finish – please wear yours for everyone’s safety. Please use this area as needed, then make room for the next runners finishing.

  • Deferred participation. We encourage you to run the 2020 race! Registered runners who choose not to take part in this year’s event may elect to defer their registration to 2021 at no charge. Race day for next year will be Oct. 24, 2021.
